Wayne introduced its first motorized School Car in 1914, adopted full-steel bus construction in 1930, and developed major safety features including guard rails, safety glass, and the 1973 Lifeguard body with continuous longitudinal panels. The 1956 merger with Divco created Divco-Wayne Corporation. Ownership later passed to Boise Cascade in 1968, then Indian Head and Thyssen-Bornemisza. A new Richmond plant opened near Interstate 70 in 1967. Wayne introduced the Busette in 1973, helping establish the cutaway-chassis small-bus format. After market overcapacity and losses during the 1980s, Wayne declared bankruptcy and discontinued operations in 1992.
