Its history began in 1837, when the Witt family established a foundry in Dublin, Indiana. The business moved to Richmond in 1875, reorganized as Wayne Works in 1888, and evolved from horse-drawn wagons and student-transport “school cars” into automobile bodies and buses. Wayne introduced its first motorized School Car in 1914, adopted full-steel bus construction in 1930, and developed major safety features including guard rails, safety glass, and the 1973 Lifeguard body with continuous longitudinal panels.
