Its network linked smaller communities in the Pacific Northwest with cities across Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Montana, and California, extending north to Calgary, Alberta. In 1958, West Coast became the first U.S. local service airline to operate turbine airliners, introducing Fairchild F-27s. Douglas DC-9 jets joined its fleet, while a planned order for Fairchild 228 jets did not lead to production. On July 1, 1968, West Coast merged with Pacific Air Lines and Bonanza Air Lines to form Air West; that carrier became Hughes Airwest in 1970. Hughes Airwest was acquired by Republic Airlines in 1980, Republic by Northwest Airlines in 1986, and the Delta-Northwest merger was completed in 2010 with Delta as the surviving carrier.
