Completed in 1909, the route linked Oakland, California, with the Salt Lake City and Ogden, Utah, area and was the last major rail line connected to California. Following a bond default, its assets were sold in 1916 to The Western Pacific Railroad Company. WP reorganized after bankruptcy in 1935, operated the California Zephyr from 1949 to 1970, and retired its final revenue steam locomotive in 1953.
