The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad — better known simply as the B&O — was one of the most important railroads in American history. Chartered in 1827 in Baltimore, Maryland, the B&O became the first common-carrier railroad in the Western Hemisphere and helped launch the American railroad age.

From its historic Mount Clare shops in Baltimore, the B&O expanded westward across the Appalachians and eventually built a network connecting major industrial cities throughout the Midwest and East. Along the way came famous locomotives, passenger trains like the Capitol Limited, and the unmistakable blue-and-gold Capitol Dome logo that became one of the classic symbols of American railroading.

By the mid-20th century, changing transportation patterns and increasing competition pushed the B&O toward consolidation. The Chesapeake & Ohio Railway took control of the railroad in 1963, and in 1973 the B&O became part of the Chessie System alongside the C&O and Western Maryland Railway. The Chessie System later became part of CSX, and in 1987 the Baltimore and Ohio finally ceased to exist as a separate railroad.

One hundred and sixty years of railroad history — and it still ended up inside a three-letter acronym.
