Chicago and North Western Railway

The Chicago and North Western Railway began in 1859, assembled from smaller Illinois and Wisconsin lines at the moment the Midwest was learning that rails could turn cornfields, lake ports, and ambitious towns into a very large business. Chicago was its corporate home and eastern gateway.

C&NW expanded through construction and acquisition, including the Galena & Chicago Union in 1864. Its routes ultimately reached across the Upper Midwest and west to Nebraska, the Dakotas, Wyoming, and beyond—moving farm products, industrial freight, passengers, and enough timetables to test anyone’s faith in pocket storage.

The railroad’s Chicago presence was especially hard to miss. Its North Western Station opened in 1911 at Madison and Canal, while its later corporate offices stood at 165 North Canal Street. The company adopted the Chicago and North Western Transportation Company name in 1972, but the familiar C&NW identity remained firmly painted across the system.

Union Pacific acquired the C&NW system in 1995, ending an independent 136-year run. Much of its former track lives on in the Union Pacific network, and Chicago-area commuter routes retain the old corridors’ everyday pulse.
