New York Air
Ghost Corp Apparel — resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
New York Air was Texas Air Corporation’s low-fare Northeast carrier, organized in 1980 and based at Hangar 5 at LaGuardia Airport in Flushing, Queens. Scheduled service began on December 19, 1980, with a New York–LaGuardia to Washington National flight—an audacious entrance into the busy shuttle market.
The airline sold a very New York proposition: lower fares, reserved seats, frequent service, and bright red aircraft marked by a stylized apple. It took on Eastern’s established shuttle with the confidence of a startup that had already picked its fight in the airport parking lot. Its snack service, the memorably named “Flying Nosh,” added bagels, coffee, and a little hometown theater to the cabin.
New York Air expanded beyond its original shuttle lanes during the 1980s, but the era’s airline consolidation moved faster than its apple-logo jets. Texas Air announced in January 1987 that New York Air would be combined with Continental Airlines; the merger took effect February 1, 1987, alongside the consolidation of other Texas Air holdings.
Our New York Air collection celebrates the red planes, Big Apple attitude, and short, sharp life of an airline that made the Northeast shuttle a little louder, snackier, and considerably more stylish.
