Ghost Corp Apparel — resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.

Founded in 1907 as Ira A. Watson Co., Watson’s grew from Knoxville, Tennessee, into a department-store chain serving towns across the Southeast and beyond. Its mix was classic department-store medicine: apparel, home furnishings, and the dependable promise that the good stuff was somewhere past the escalator.

Watson’s expanded from downtown county-seat stores into the shopping-center and mall era, ultimately operating across Alabama, Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Missouri, Indiana, and Illinois. Merchandise flowed through its Knoxville corporate offices and centralized distribution operation—because retail dreams run on loading docks as much as window displays.

The chain filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in February 1992, when it could not renew bank financing. It then operated 31 stores in nine states. Watson’s reorganized and emerged from bankruptcy earlier than its six-year plan anticipated, but the retail weather had turned distinctly unfriendly.

Peebles acquired Watson’s for about $4.45 million on June 29, 1998. At the transaction, Watson’s had 24 stores in seven states; Peebles kept 22 stores operating under the Watson’s name temporarily, closed the Knoxville corporate office in August 1998, and later converted the stores to Peebles.
