Celebrate a railway that helped shape connections across Georgia. Founded in 1833, the Central of Georgia Railway built from Savannah toward Macon and later became part of a broader network linking inland cities with Atlantic seaports. Its history spans regional railroad acquisitions, passenger service aboard the Nancy Hanks II, and successive eras under larger railway companies. This shirt offers a straightforward way for collectors and rail fans to show their interest in a distinctive Southern railway story.
The Central of Georgia Railway began in 1833 as the Central Rail Road and Canal Company, later adopting the name Central Rail Road and Banking Company of Georgia to attract investment. Built to connect Savannah with Macon, Georgia, its line reached the eastern bank of the Ocmulgee River from 1837 to 1843; a bridge into Macon followed in 1851. The route helped link Chattanooga with Atlantic seaports. After a period under the Richmond Terminal Company, financial difficulties led to foreclosure and reorganization as the Central of Georgia Railway on November 1, 1895. It expanded through leases and purchases of railroads, including the Augusta and Savannah, Savannah and Western, and Southwestern Railroad. E. H. Harriman gained control in 1907, then sold his interest to Illinois Central in 1909. The railway entered receivership in 1932 and emerged in 1948. Southern Railway became its owner in 1963; in 1971, Southern formed the Central of Georgia Railroad to combine it with the Savannah and Atlanta Railway and Wrightsville and Tennille Railroad. It subsequently became part of Norfolk Southern Railway in 1982. The railway’s Nancy Hanks II served Atlanta, Macon, and Savannah from 1947 to 1971.
