GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Start the day with a reminder of Champion Air, a carrier that connected vacation travel, sports charters, and a distinctive Boeing 727 fleet. Its roots trace to MGM Grand Air in California, while its later chapter began when Minnesota tour operator Front Page Tours acquired the air operator's certificate in 1995. Champion Air became closely associated with Northwest and MLT vacation traffic before announcing liquidation in 2008. A thoughtful choice for aviation enthusiasts and collectors of specialized airline history.
Champion Air grew out of MGM Grand Air, a California airline established in 1987 that began flying in September of that year. MGM Grand Air operated premium scheduled service between Los Angeles and New York, a shuttle between Los Angeles and Orange County, and charter flights. As business jets gained popularity, the airline became unprofitable. Minnesota tour operator Front Page Tours bought its air operator's certificate in July 1995, changed the name to Champion Air, and standardized the fleet on Boeing 727 aircraft. In March 1997, Minnesota Twins owner Carl Pohlad and Northwest Airlines acquired the company from Richard Page. Champion Air moved to Minneapolis and shared facilities and resources with Northwest, while becoming a leading charter provider for Northwest-owned MLT Vacations. MLT traffic represented about 75 to 80 percent of Champion Air's operations. Northwest planned to move those passengers to its own flights during 2008, and also took over a charter contract serving 13 National Basketball Association teams. On March 31, 2008, president and CEO Lee Steele announced voluntary liquidation. High fuel costs and the aging 727-200 fleet were cited among the reasons. All flights ended May 31, 2008.
