Share a local history story with young shoppers through this Chappell's kids tee. Chappell's began as a family-owned Syracuse department store in 1896, then grew to serve communities throughout central and northern New York. Its presence in downtown Syracuse and area shopping centers made the name part of daily life for many families. The chain's independent story concluded in 1994, but memories of shopping trips and familiar local stores remain. A fun keepsake for families with a connection to the region.
Chappell's was a family-owned department store chain based in Syracuse, New York. The business opened in 1896 and continued for nearly a century, closing in 1994. At its peak, the chain operated ten stores across the Syracuse area and in Cortland, Watertown, and Massena. Its locations included a downtown Syracuse store and outlets in shopping centers across central and northern New York, among them Shop City Plaza, Carousel Center, Fingerlakes Mall, and Salmon Run Mall. In January 1992, the corporation filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. As part of its reorganization, four stores closed. Under pressure from creditors, chairman Charles A. Chappell Jr., a grandson of the founder, sold the company and its remaining six stores to Bon-Ton Stores in October 1994. The sale marked the end of Chappell's as an independent family-owned chain and its transition to new ownership. The company’s history reflects the growth of regional department-store retailing, the role of malls in its store network, and the financial pressures that reshaped the chain in its final years.
