Chappell Jr., a grandson of the founder, sold the company and its remaining six stores to Bon-Ton Stores in October 1994. The sale marked the end of Chappell's as an independent family-owned chain and its transition to new ownership. The company’s history reflects the growth of regional department-store retailing, the role of malls in its store network, and the financial pressures that reshaped the chain in its final years.
