Fisher Foods began in Cleveland in 1907 as Fisher Brothers Company, founded by brothers Manning and Charles Fisher. They had entered the grocery trade in New York City before opening their first Cleveland store at 4623 Lorain Avenue. By the mid-1960s, the chain was losing money, and in 1965 investors Carl and John Fazio and Sam and Frank Costa bought a controlling interest. Their purchase combined Fisher Foods with the Fazio's and Costa supermarket chains. The company expanded beyond Ohio in 1968 by acquiring Chicago-based Dominick's, and also acquired the Kanter's chain in Cincinnati. In 1969 it took a stake in National Fast Food Corporation, gaining Arthur Treacher's Fish & Chips territory rights in Cleveland and Chicago. Other acquisitions included Pittsburgh-area department store chain Clabers and, in 1972, Southern California's Shopping Bag. Those stores became Fazio's Shopping Bag; Albertsons bought 46 of them in 1978. The DiMatteo family bought Dominick's back in the 1980s. In 1988, Fisher Foods merged with Rini-Rego Stop N Shop and wholesaler Seaway Foods to form Riser Foods. Giant Eagle absorbed Riser Foods in 1997.
