Island Airlines was a commuter carrier headquartered at Barnstable Municipal Airport in Barnstable, Massachusetts. It operated hourly scheduled service linking Hyannis with Nantucket and used the slogan "Nantucket's Community Airline." Its roots reached to 1930, when former barnstormer Milton "Red" Hersberger developed an early aerial transport operation to Nantucket with two biplanes under the Erie Isle Airways name. In 1932 he acquired his first Ford Trimotor, a repaired aircraft that proved useful enough for four more examples to join the fleet. Following World War II, surplus engines supported the Trimotor operation. Hersberger renamed the airline Sky Tours and sold it in 1953; the business changed hands again in 1973. William McGrath assumed ownership in 1991, when it received the Island Airlines name. The company later added Grand Caravans beginning in 2009 and planned a transition to an all-Caravan fleet. Island Airlines and sister company Cape & Islands Air Freight ceased operations on December 11, 2015.
