GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Founded by James Brice White in Augusta in 1874, J. B. White became a familiar department-store name throughout Georgia and South Carolina. Its history includes a downtown flagship, suburban branches, and moves into the mall era, before most locations became Dillard’s and some became Belk. This vanity license plate celebrates a piece of regional retail history for collectors and former shoppers. It recalls the stores, communities, and changing shopping landscape that made the name part of local memory.
J. B. White was a department store chain founded in Augusta, Georgia, in 1874 by James Brice White, an Irish immigrant. Its early offerings included clothing, furniture, appliances, and community programs. In the early 1910s, White sold the store to H.B. Claflin & Company, which also owned Lord & Taylor. The chain was owned by Mercantile Stores for most of its existence, with most locations in South Carolina and others in Augusta and Savannah. In Augusta, the original downtown store later had suburban branches at National Hills and Daniel Village, including clothing and homegoods locations. The chain left its longtime downtown flagship in 1978 for a new store at Regency Mall. In 1990, a Savannah location opened at Savannah Mall. J. B. White moved its last flagship to Augusta Mall in 1998, shortly before Mercantile Stores was sold to Dillard’s for $2.9 billion. Most J. B. White locations became Dillard’s stores; some in overlapping areas became Belk. The former Broad Street store in Augusta was purchased in June 2007 for conversion into condominiums.
