Carry a piece of 1980s airline history on your next journey with this Jet America Airlines luggage tag. The Long Beach-based carrier began scheduled service in 1981, flying from Long Beach to Chicago O'Hare, and later connected travelers with cities including Dallas/Fort Worth, St. Louis, Oakland, and Las Vegas. Its expanding route map and distinctive independent years make this design a fitting companion for aviation enthusiasts, frequent travelers, and collectors who remember a changing era of American air travel.
Jet America Airlines was a U.S. domestic carrier headquartered in Signal Hill, California, near Long Beach. Its founding group was led largely by former Air California executives. After receiving a Civil Aeronautics Board finding that it was fit to operate on June 18, 1981, the airline began service on November 16, flying from Long Beach Airport to Chicago O'Hare. By 1984 it served Dallas/Fort Worth, St. Louis, and Oakland and had introduced a frequent flyer program. Its fleet included McDonnell Douglas MD-82 aircraft; a short-lived Boeing 707 charter lease in 1984 ended in January 1985 after significant losses. New services to Detroit, Las Vegas, and Orange County followed in 1985. Jet America later operated a small Las Vegas hub and, as part of Alaska Air Group, flew routes linking western and eastern U.S. cities. Alaska completed its acquisition by the end of 1986, initially keeping the airlines separate. After reporting a $9 million Jet America loss for the first nine months of 1987, Alaska merged the carrier into Alaska Airlines in October 1987. Alaska then sold Jet America's Chicago O'Hare and Washington National slots to United Airlines.
