Celebrate a distinctive chapter in U.S. airline history wherever the road takes you. Jet America began with service between Long Beach and Chicago O’Hare, built a changing network across the country, and experimented with a small Las Vegas hub. Alaska Air Group acquired the airline in 1986, and it merged into Alaska Airlines the following year. This car magnet brings the story of a short-lived carrier to aviation enthusiasts, airline collectors, and fans of the routes and brands that shaped the 1980s.
Jet America Airlines was a U.S. domestic carrier founded by a group led largely by former Air California executives. The Civil Aeronautics Board found the airline fit, willing and able on June 18, 1981, and it began flying on November 16, with a route from Long Beach Airport, California, to Chicago O’Hare. By July 1984, its network included Dallas/Fort Worth, St. Louis, and Oakland, and it had introduced a frequent flyer program. Its fleet included McDonnell Douglas MD-82s; a leased Boeing 707 used for charter work was returned early in January 1985 after the operation incurred significant losses. Jet America added Detroit, Las Vegas, and Orange County service in 1985. In 1986 it operated a small Las Vegas hub, while its routes continued to change. Alaska Air Group completed its acquisition late that year and initially tried to run the airlines separately. Jet America joined Alaska Air Group as a separate carrier, but Alaska later cited a $9 million loss for the first nine months of 1987. In October 1987, Jet America was merged into Alaska Airlines. Alaska also sold Jet America’s Chicago O’Hare and Washington National slots to United Airlines in exchange for cash and certain West Coast facilities.
