GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
From the Cleveland Fabric Shop opened in 1943 to the Jo-Ann Fabrics name adopted in 1963, this company’s history reflects generations of American fabric and craft retail. Its changing identity, acquisitions, and transition to the Joann name make it a distinctive subject for collectors and former shoppers. This tough phone case offers a way to carry that store history into everyday routines, remembering a familiar chain that began in Ohio and closed its last stores in 2025.
Jo-Ann’s history began in 1943, when German immigrant families opened the Cleveland Fabric Shop in Cleveland, Ohio. Following expansion, the shop was renamed Jo-Ann Fabrics in 1963, combining the names Joan and Jacqueline Ann. In 1969, the business became a publicly held corporation called Fabri-Centers of America, Inc. It acquired the 342-store Cloth World chain in 1994 and House of Fabrics in 1998; that retailer had also operated as Fabricland, Fabric King, and So-Fro Fabrics. In September 1998, Fabri-Centers changed its corporate name to Jo-Ann Stores Inc., and its stores were renamed Jo-Ann Fabrics. The company went private after a 2010 buyout announcement and 2011 stock-market delisting, then returned to public trading in 2021. It rebranded as Joann in 2018. After Chapter 11 filings in 2024 and 2025, the chain began liquidating in February 2025; its last stores closed on May 30. Michaels later acquired Joann’s intellectual property and private labels, but not its stores.
