Bring a piece of New England retail history to your space with this Jordan Marsh metal sign. Founded in Boston in 1841, the business grew into a department store known for its downtown flagship, suburban branches, and the distinctive domed location at Shopper's World in Framingham. The historic Washington Street flagship was demolished in 1975, and the New England stores later became Macy's. This sign honors the memories and local identity connected with a departed department store name.
Founded in Boston in 1841 by Eben Dyer Jordan, Jordan Marsh began as a dry-goods business serving wholesale customers. Benjamin L. Marsh joined Jordan in 1851, and in 1861 the partners began selling directly to the public from 450 Washington Street. The business grew into a department store, expanding into nearby buildings and offering goods from around the world. Its Boston flagship later occupied a large downtown complex, while the company also opened suburban branches. The domed Jordan Marsh store at Shopper's World in Framingham opened in 1951. Campeau acquired Allied in 1986 and Federated in 1988. After bankruptcy proceedings and corporate consolidation, Allied merged into Federated in 1992. The historic Washington Street flagship was demolished in 1975, and Federated converted the New England Jordan Marsh stores to Macy's in 1996. A separate Florida division, operated by Allied from 1956, became part of Burdines in 1991.
