GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Start the day with a reminder of Pittsburgh’s department store history. This ceramic coffee mug celebrates the Joseph Horne Company, founded in 1849 and remembered for its downtown flagship, familiar shopping traditions, and growth into a regional chain. The company’s story stretches from Joseph Horne’s first business purchase to suburban expansion and the close of Horne’s stores under that name in 1994. Enjoy it during a quiet coffee break or add it to a collection honoring local landmarks, retail history, and generations of Pittsburgh shoppers.
Founded in Pittsburgh on February 22, 1849, the Joseph Horne Company grew from Joseph Horne's purchase of the F.H. Eaton business into a leading regional department store. Its early locations included Market Street and, from 1871, Mercantile Library Hall on Penn Avenue. The flagship at Penn Avenue and Stanwix Street opened in 1893; fires damaged it in 1897 and 1900, and the complex later expanded with adjoining buildings. In 1966, Associated Dry Goods acquired Horne's and expanded into suburban malls in the Pittsburgh region, Erie, and Northeast Ohio. A local investor group bought the chain in December 1986 after May Department Stores acquired Associated Dry Goods. A proposed combination with Dillard's and Ohio chain Higbee's fell through; a 1992 settlement transferred five Ohio stores to Dillard's. In 1994, Federated Department Stores acquired the remaining ten stores and merged them into its Lazarus division. Horne's stores ceased operating under that name on August 29, 1994. The flagship became a Lazarus store, then closed in 1995; later company consolidations brought surviving locations into the Macy's organization in 2006.
