GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Take a piece of Pittsburgh history along on your next journey with a Horne's-inspired passport cover. The Joseph Horne Company began in 1849, when Joseph Horne purchased the F.H. Eaton business, and grew into a leading regional department store. Its story reached beyond downtown Pittsburgh through suburban expansion, while the flagship remained a landmark at Penn Avenue and Stanwix Street. A thoughtful travel keepsake for collectors and anyone who remembers this distinctive local retailer.
Founded in Pittsburgh on February 22, 1849, the Joseph Horne Company grew from Joseph Horne's purchase of the F.H. Eaton business into a leading regional department store. Its early locations included Market Street and, from 1871, Mercantile Library Hall on Penn Avenue. The flagship at Penn Avenue and Stanwix Street opened in 1893; fires damaged it in 1897 and 1900, and the complex later expanded with adjoining buildings. In 1966, Associated Dry Goods acquired Horne's and expanded into suburban malls in the Pittsburgh region, Erie, and Northeast Ohio. A local investor group bought the chain in December 1986 after May Department Stores acquired Associated Dry Goods. A proposed combination with Dillard's and Ohio chain Higbee's fell through; a 1992 settlement transferred five Ohio stores to Dillard's. In 1994, Federated Department Stores acquired the remaining ten stores and merged them into its Lazarus division. Horne's stores ceased operating under that name on August 29, 1994. The flagship became a Lazarus store, then closed in 1995; later company consolidations brought surviving locations into the Macy's organization in 2006.
