Celebrate Juniper Networks’ place in the story of modern networking with a polo connected to a distinctive company timeline. Founded in California in February 1996, Juniper brought its M40 core router to telecommunications companies and went public on NASDAQ in 1999. Its later work across security and software-defined networking reflected a changing industry. The acquisition completed by HPE in 2025 marked the end of the independent company era, giving this piece meaning for technology-history collectors and Juniper fans.

Juniper Networks was founded in February 1996 in California by Pradeep Sindhu, who had conceived the idea for internet-optimized routers the previous year. Scott Kriens became its first CEO about seven months later, while Sindhu served as chief technology officer. After venture and industry funding, the company went public on NASDAQ in June 1999. Its first product, the M40 core router, was used by telecommunications companies, and the company moved its headquarters from Mountain View to Sunnyvale in 2000. Juniper expanded beyond core routing through the 2000 purchase of Pacific Broadband and the 2002 acquisition of Unisphere Networks, entering cable and edge-router markets. It entered security with its JProtect toolkit in 2003 and acquired NetScreen Technologies in 2004. CEO transitions included Kevin Johnson in 2008, Shaygan Kheradpir in 2014 and Rami Rahim later that year. From 2014, the company emphasized software-defined networking. Hewlett Packard Enterprise agreed to acquire Juniper in January 2024; the deal closed July 2, 2025. Juniper was absorbed into HPE Networking, and its former products continued under the HPE Juniper Networking brand.
