Give a vehicle a nod to southeastern Wisconsin retail history with this Kohl's Food Stores vanity license plate. The story reaches back to Maxwell Kohl’s grocery business, operating since 1927, and his first supermarket in 1946. Over time, the stores became a major Milwaukee-area chain and were known as Kohl's Food Store and Kohl's Food Emporium. Their closure in 2003 marked the end of a familiar local presence, making this a distinctive display piece for former shoppers and regional history collectors.
Kohl's Food Stores was a grocery chain serving the Milwaukee area and southeastern Wisconsin. Its founder, Maxwell Kohl, had operated traditional grocery stores since 1927 and built his first supermarket in 1946, beginning the chain that became a major local supermarket business. In September 1962, after the grocery operation had grown into the largest supermarket chain in the Milwaukee area, Kohl opened his first department store in Brookfield, Wisconsin. In 1972, Batus Inc., the U.S. retail division of British American Tobacco Company, acquired a controlling interest in Kohl's Corporation, which then operated grocery, department, drug, and liquor stores. The Kohl family continued to manage the company. The grocery stores were sold to The Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company in 1983 and operated as Kohl's Food Store, later becoming Kohl's Food Emporium. In February 2003, A&P put the stores up for sale as part of a debt-reduction effort, then closed all Kohl's Food Stores locations that year. Madison-area stores were sold to Roundy's. The distribution center was in Waukesha, and management offices were in Milwaukee.
