Celebrate the enduring memories of Marsh Supermarkets, founded in Muncie, Indiana, in 1931. From a single store, the family-led business expanded through central Indiana and western Ohio, later adding O’Malia’s Food Markets to its history. Marsh also marked an important retail milestone in 1974, when its Troy store became the first grocery store in the world to use a barcode scanner. This quarter-zip sweatshirt connects a familiar regional name with the shoppers and communities that remember it.
Founded by Ermal Marsh in Muncie, Indiana, in 1931, Marsh grew from a single store into a regional grocery chain. It went public in 1953, the year it operated 16 Marsh stores, and opened its first Ohio store in Van Wert in 1956. After Ermal’s death in 1959, his brother Estel became president. The business adopted the name Marsh Supermarkets in 1960; Don Marsh became president in 1968. In 1974, a Troy, Ohio, Marsh store became the first grocery store in the world to use a barcode scanner. The company acquired O’Malia’s Food Markets in 2001 and later converted three Mr. D’s stores to that banner. Sun Capital Partners acquired Marsh in 2006, taking it private, and separated Village Pantry convenience stores in 2007. Marsh filed for bankruptcy in May 2017 and was liquidated. Kroger subsidiary Topvalco acquired 11 stores, while Fresh Encounter acquired 15. Fresh Encounter rebranded 14 as Needler’s Fresh Market and one in Van Wert as Chief Supermarket. The remaining stores closed by July 2017, ending Marsh’s operations.
