Founded by Ermal Marsh in Muncie in 1931, the company grew into a familiar presence across central Indiana and western Ohio. Its history spans family leadership, the O’Malia’s acquisition, and a landmark 1974 barcode-scanning milestone in Troy, Ohio. This design is for former customers, Indiana history fans, and collectors who remember Marsh as part of their community.
Founded by Ermal Marsh in Muncie, Indiana, in 1931, Marsh grew from a single store into a regional grocery chain. It went public in 1953, the year it operated 16 Marsh stores, and opened its first Ohio store in Van Wert in 1956. After Ermal’s death in 1959, his brother Estel became president. The business adopted the name Marsh Supermarkets in 1960; Don Marsh became president in 1968. In 1974, a Troy, Ohio, Marsh store became the first grocery store in the world to use a barcode scanner. The company acquired O’Malia’s Food Markets in 2001 and later converted three Mr. D’s stores to that banner. Sun Capital Partners acquired Marsh in 2006, taking it private, and separated Village Pantry convenience stores in 2007. Marsh filed for bankruptcy in May 2017 and was liquidated. Kroger subsidiary Topvalco acquired 11 stores, while Fresh Encounter acquired 15. Fresh Encounter rebranded 14 as Needler’s Fresh Market and one in Van Wert as Chief Supermarket. The remaining stores closed by July 2017, ending Marsh’s operations.

Care instructions
- Use warm water, dish soap and clean spots off your sleeve. It's not necessary to soak the whole sleeve. For hard to clean spots use a soft bristled brush.
