Carry the story of Nash's on your next outing. Founded by Hammond G. Nash in Pasadena in 1889, the business grew from a grocery on Colorado Street into a department-store chain serving nearby communities. Its locations included downtown Pomona, the Arcadia Hub, Whittier Quad, and the Pasadena flagship on East Colorado Boulevard. This travel mug celebrates the local places and retail history behind the name, suited to collectors, longtime residents, and anyone curious about Southern California's changing shopping districts.
Nash's, also known as F. C. Nash & Co., was a department store founded in Pasadena, California, in 1889 by Hammond G. Nash. He expanded his grocery on Colorado Street into a full department store and developed the business into a small chain serving nearby communities. Locations included Alhambra; downtown Pomona, first at 36 West Main Street and later at 450 Pomona Mall; West Arcadia at the Arcadia Hub shopping center, 1325 South Baldwin Avenue; Whittier at Whittier Quad; and Fullerton near Harbor Boulevard and Orangethorpe Avenue. The Whittier store, a 30,000-square-foot location, opened in 1954. The Pasadena flagship stood at 250 East Colorado Boulevard. It was destroyed in a 1976 fire, leaving the building a total loss. The financial losses associated with the fire proved unrecoverable for the chain, which closed entirely. Nash's history traces a local grocery's growth into a regional department-store business, with locations tied to downtown streets, shopping centers, and a pedestrian mall.
