Founded by George T. Baker in Florida in 1934, National Airlines began scheduled passenger and mail flights on October 15 between St. Petersburg and destinations within Florida. The airline was incorporated in Florida in 1937, moved its headquarters to Jacksonville in 1939, and later made Miami International Airport its home base. Its early Buccaneer Route linked Miami and New Orleans. After gaining East Coast rights in 1944, it began flights to New York in 1945 and received approval to serve Havana in 1946. National expanded across the United States, adding California service in 1961 and scheduled London flights in 1970. Its European network later included Paris, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, and Zürich. Aircraft across its history included the Lockheed Electra, Boeing 707 and 727, Boeing 747, and McDonnell Douglas DC-10. In 1980, Pan Am completed its acquisition of National, taking over its fleet and route network. Pan Am continued using National’s Miami maintenance base and headquarters building until Pan Am ceased operations in 1991. National’s Sun King logo was later used by Southeast Airlines.
