Mark a space with a tribute to New York Air, the low-fare carrier that took to the skies from LaGuardia in December 1980. Its early service connected New York, Boston, and Washington, while later changes brought a stronger focus on business travelers and an expanding Dulles operation. The apple identity and remembered Flying Nosh snacks give the airline a character all its own. This sign celebrates a distinctive chapter of airline history that ended when New York Air joined Continental in 1987.
New York Air was a low-fare U.S. airline launched by Texas Air Corporation, which announced its plans in September 1980. Based at Hangar 5 at LaGuardia Airport in Queens, it began flying on December 19, 1980, with service from New York to Washington National. Its early network focused on hourly routes linking New York, Boston, and Washington, and later included hubs or operating centers at LaGuardia, Newark, Boston, Raleigh-Durham, and Washington Dulles. After early financial losses and route changes, the airline repositioned itself under chairman Michael E. Levine, adding business-oriented services and expanding its Dulles operation. Its fleet included DC-9 and MD-80 aircraft, followed by Boeing 737-300s from 1985. Beginning in 1986, Texas Air coordinated the operations of its subsidiaries, and New York Air worked with Continental under the New York Air/Continental Team name. In January 1987, Texas Air announced plans to combine New York Air, Frontier Airlines, and People Express Airlines with Continental. New York Air ceased operating on February 1, 1987; its aircraft were first marked with Continental's New York Air titles and later received Continental's full livery. Continental retained some former New York Air shuttle operations.
