New York, Chicago and St. Louis Railroad Men's Sport Polo Shirt
Celebrate the Nickel Plate Road and its place in American railroad history with this men's sport polo shirt. Organized in 1881, the New York, Chicago and St. Louis Railroad built a route connecting Buffalo and Chicago, then expanded toward St. Louis through later acquisitions. Its story continued through changing ownership before its 1964 merger with Norfolk and Western. Made for rail fans, history-minded outings, and collectors who appreciate the familiar Nickel Plate name and the routes that linked cities across the Midwest and Northeast.
The New York, Chicago and St. Louis Railroad, commonly known as the Nickel Plate Road, operated from 1881 to 1964 across parts of New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Missouri. Organized on February 3, 1881, it was built to connect Buffalo and Chicago in competition with the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway. Its first trains ran over the full system on October 16, 1882. Ownership changed over time: the Seney Syndicate sold the railroad to William H. Vanderbilt in 1882, and the Van Sweringen brothers acquired control in 1916. Under president John J. Bernet, the railroad expanded through purchases of the Lake Erie and Western Railroad in 1922 and the Toledo, St. Louis and Western Railroad, also called the Clover Leaf Route, later that year. The Chesapeake and Ohio Railway gained control in 1937 and ended its control in 1947. The Nickel Plate leased the Wheeling and Lake Erie Railway in 1949. On October 16, 1964, it merged with Norfolk and Western Railway and other carriers. Norfolk and Western later combined with Southern Railway in 1982 to form Norfolk Southern.
