Bring a piece of railroad history to your desk with this Nickel Plate Road metal business card holder. Organized in 1881 to connect Buffalo and Chicago, the New York, Chicago and St. Louis Railroad grew through acquisitions that extended its story toward St. Louis. The line changed hands and identities over the decades before merging with Norfolk and Western in 1964. A distinctive desk accessory for railroad collectors, history enthusiasts, and anyone who appreciates the companies and routes behind American rail travel.
The New York, Chicago and St. Louis Railroad, commonly known as the Nickel Plate Road, operated from 1881 to 1964 across parts of New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Missouri. Organized on February 3, 1881, it was built to connect Buffalo and Chicago in competition with the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway. Its first trains ran over the full system on October 16, 1882. Ownership changed over time: the Seney Syndicate sold the railroad to William H. Vanderbilt in 1882, and the Van Sweringen brothers acquired control in 1916. Under president John J. Bernet, the railroad expanded through purchases of the Lake Erie and Western Railroad in 1922 and the Toledo, St. Louis and Western Railroad, also called the Clover Leaf Route, later that year. The Chesapeake and Ohio Railway gained control in 1937 and ended its control in 1947. The Nickel Plate leased the Wheeling and Lake Erie Railway in 1949. On October 16, 1964, it merged with Norfolk and Western Railway and other carriers. Norfolk and Western later combined with Southern Railway in 1982 to form Norfolk Southern.
