Take NeXT’s technology legacy along on commutes, errands, and everyday journeys. Founded in 1985 to build workstations for higher education and business, NeXT later shifted its focus to software, where NeXTSTEP and its development environment made a lasting mark. The company’s tools were used in the creation of the first web server and browser, and its technologies became foundations for later Apple operating systems. This travel tumbler is a fitting choice for collectors and enthusiasts who appreciate the people and ideas behind computing’s evolution.
NeXT was founded in 1985 in California by Steve Jobs and former Apple employees to build workstations for higher education and business. The company introduced the NeXT Computer in 1988 and released the NeXTcube and NeXTstation in 1990. Its hardware had limited commercial success, but NeXTSTEP, its object-oriented operating system and development environment, became influential. NeXT also developed WebObjects and partnered with Sun Microsystems on the OpenStep specification. In 1993, the company left the hardware business, changed its name to NeXT Software, Inc., and focused on software, including OPENSTEP for Mach. Its workstations and software were used to develop the first web server and browser, as well as Doom and Quake. Apple announced its acquisition of NeXT in December 1996 and completed the $427 million deal in February 1997. Jobs returned to Apple as an advisor and later became its CEO. Apple built Rhapsody, Mac OS X, and later macOS on NeXT software technologies, carrying NeXT's work into a new era of Apple operating systems.
