Keep the Olympia Sports story close with a pullover honoring the retailer’s regional roots. The company began in Portland, Maine, in 1975 and grew to 152 stores across New England, New York, and the Atlantic coast region. Its headquarters in Westbrook and Boston flagship reflected a strong connection to the Northeast. After store liquidations and a 2022 bankruptcy filing, its remaining intellectual properties were sold in 2023, making this a thoughtful piece for retail-history enthusiasts and former customers.
Olympia Sports was an American sporting goods retailer founded in Portland, Maine, in 1975. The business grew to 152 stores, concentrated mainly in New England, New York, and the Atlantic coast region. Its headquarters were in Westbrook, Maine, and it operated a flagship store in Boston. The company also housed the Olympia Sports Foundation, a nonprofit clothing bank that donated unused clothing and vendor materials to people in need; the foundation closed in 2016 as a cost-saving measure. In October 2019, Denver-based JackRabbit was announced as the buyer of 75 of the remaining 152 stores, while the other 77 were slated for liquidation. On May 5, 2022, Schottenstein Stores acquired some locations and liquidation sales began. On July 22, the company announced that all remaining stores would be liquidated and closed by the end of September. Olympia filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in September 2022. On February 17, 2023, its remaining intellectual properties were sold at auction to Albert Fouerti.
