GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Carry a piece of Chicago-area grocery history on your travels with this Omni Superstore luggage tag. The chain began in 1987 at Lake View Plaza in Orland Park, bringing a distinctive warehouse-style supermarket concept to local shoppers. Its reach later extended across the Chicago metropolitan area and into Northwest Indiana. For collectors of regional retail names, this design recalls a memorable chapter in the changing landscape of familiar neighborhood stores.
Omni Superstore was a Chicago-area supermarket chain created by Dominick's Finer Foods to answer the arrival of low-price, warehouse-style grocery competition. Its first store opened in April 1987 at Lake View Plaza in Orland Park, Illinois, near 159th Street and LaGrange Road. Dominick's described the concept as a more distinctive take on a warehouse grocery store. Over the following decade, 17 more locations opened in the Chicago metropolitan area, and the chain also entered Northwest Indiana in 1991 with a store in Schererville. In October 1997, Dominick's announced that Omni stores would be converted to its Fresh format, citing weaker performance than its other stores. The Schererville location became a Dominick's in 1997 and closed in 1999. Dominick's was purchased by Safeway in 1998; the Fresh concept was later eliminated and some underperforming stores closed. The Hammond, Indiana, location opened as a Dominick's in January 1999 and shut seven months later. The Omni name also appeared on organic store-brand foods at Dominick's and other Safeway stores. Chicago grocer Bob Mariano later led Mariano's, whose store design and operating model were described as similar to the Omni he had run.
