GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Carry the story of Overseas National Airways on the road. Founded through a postwar airline venture, ONA moved from leased C-54s and military charters to jet operations in 1966, then became a leading US supplemental carrier. Its original airline closed on September 15, 1978, a date worth knowing as a separately certificated successor later used the same name. This travel mug suits long drives, busy days, and collectors who appreciate the details behind a distinctive airline history.
Overseas National Airways (ONA) grew from Air Travel, incorporated in California on May 18, 1946, by former Navy transport pilot George W. Tompkins. Renamed Calasia Air Transport in 1947, it operated leased C-54s before ONA was incorporated in Delaware in July 1950 and began Pacific flying under military contract. Based initially in San Francisco, the airline later operated from Oakland, with a smaller New York base and a Washington, DC, headquarters. ONA was largely a military charter carrier until 1963, when it ceased operations and entered bankruptcy. New owners backed its exit from bankruptcy in July 1965, and flying resumed that October. Jet operations began in 1966; by 1969 ONA was among the largest US supplemental carriers, serving charter markets and expanding into cargo, ground handling, hotels, cruise ships and riverboats. Its Mississippi Queen began service in 1976, after the riverboat operation had been sold. ONA based maintenance at Wilmington Air Park, Ohio, from 1972 to 1977. Competition and weak finances led the original airline to liquidate outside bankruptcy; its last day was September 15, 1978. Steedman Hinckley soon formed a separately certificated successor, also called Overseas National Airways, later renamed National Airlines.
