Wear a reminder of Pamir Airways and its place in Afghanistan’s aviation story with this hoodie or sweatshirt. The Kabul-based private carrier began scheduled flights in 1995, operating from Kabul International Airport and carrying a name inspired by the Pamir Mountains. Its history includes passenger service, early aircraft, and journeys for Afghan pilgrims during Hajj seasons. A thoughtful choice for airline collectors and aviation enthusiasts interested in regional travel history and the rise of private air service in Afghanistan.

Pamir Airways was a privately owned airline headquartered in Kabul, Afghanistan, and operated scheduled passenger flights from Kabul International Airport. Its name refers to the Pamir Mountains and translates as “roof of the world.” Before the Taliban takeover, it became Afghanistan’s first private airline, receiving an Air Operator’s Certificate in 1994 from the authorities then responsible for civil aviation in the Islamic State of Afghanistan. Flight operations began in 1995 with one Boeing 707-300 and two Antonov An-12 aircraft. In April 2008, a group of Afghan businessmen led by Sherkhan Farnood took over the airline; Farnood, then president of the Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce & Industries and a former Kabul Bank chairman, became airline chairman. Pamir received a $98 million loan from Kabul Bank. An effort to reorganize the airline’s assets, including its aging grounded aircraft, could not recover the funds through sales. On 19 March 2011, its license was withdrawn, officially because of its poor safety record. During the Hajj season, the airline carried Afghan pilgrims to Saudi Arabia, including 9,000 in 2004 and 15,000 in 2005. On 17 May 2010, Flight 112 crashed at Salang Pass while traveling from Kunduz to Kabul; all 39 passengers and five crew members died.
