GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Keep business cards close with a nod to Pantry Pride, a distinctive name in American grocery history. The company began as Food Fair, founded by Samuel and George Friedland in Harrisburg in the 1920s, and introduced its Pantry Pride discount format in Hazlet, New Jersey, in 1964. The name later marked a wider chain before the business moved beyond groceries. This holder suits collectors and retail history fans who appreciate the stories behind familiar company names.
Pantry Pride grew from Food Fair, a supermarket business founded by brothers Samuel and George Friedland, who opened their first store in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, in the 1920s. The Food Fair name appeared in the late 1940s, and the chain had 275 stores by 1957. Purchases expanded its reach, including Jacksonville-area Setzer's Supermarkets in 1958 and J.M. Fields department stores in 1961. Food Fair acquired Philadelphia's Best Markets, whose Pantry Pride private label became the name for a new discount-store format. Its first Pantry Pride store opened in Hazlet, New Jersey, on August 26, 1964. By the early 1970s, many stores had shifted to the Pantry Pride banner. Acquisitions in 1976 included Hills Supermarkets and 17 former Penn Fruit stores. Financial trouble brought bankruptcy in 1978 and ended the Friedland family's control. After restructuring, the company was based in Fort Lauderdale and operated as Pantry Pride Stores, Inc. In 1985, investor Ronald Perelman gained control and used Pantry Pride to acquire Revlon. In 1986, the corporate name changed to Revlon Group, marking the end of Pantry Pride as a grocery company. Remaining stores passed to other operators, and the final stores were closed or sold by 2000.
