Keep business cards close with a nod to Penn Central Transportation, the railroad created by a landmark merger of eastern rivals. The legal merger took effect on February 1, 1968, bringing together the Pennsylvania Railroad and New York Central, with the New Haven also joining the system. Penn Central became known for a brief, consequential chapter that included the largest U.S. corporate insolvency of its time and the 1976 transfer of viable rail operations to Conrail. A thoughtful desk accessory for history-minded collectors.

Penn Central Transportation Company was an American Class I railroad formed from the Pennsylvania Railroad and New York Central Railroad, whose legal merger took effect on February 1, 1968. The Pennsylvania Railroad was the nominal survivor and initially took the name Pennsylvania New York Central Transportation Company; Penn Central became its trade name and was officially adopted on May 8, 1968. The New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad joined the system. The three predecessors had extensive service in the New York metropolitan area, with routes reaching New England and Chicago. The merger brought together rivals with different corporate cultures, incompatible systems and deteriorating infrastructure. Penn Central entered bankruptcy protection on June 21, 1970, then the largest U.S. corporate insolvency. In 1976, its viable rail operations transferred to federally owned Conrail. Conrail later became private and was divided between Norfolk Southern Railway and CSX Transportation in 1999. Penn Central's corporate assets followed a separate path: its former Pennsylvania Railroad entity became The Penn Central Corporation and, in March 1994, American Premier Underwriters. The company's history links a major northeastern rail merger, a landmark bankruptcy and the reorganization of regional rail service.
