GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Add a familiar name from American pharmacy history to your collection with this Peoples Drug vanity license plate. Founded in Alexandria in 1905, the company grew into a major regional chain, with stores serving Washington, D.C., and communities across multiple states. Its story includes decades of neighborhood service, changing ownership, and the 1994 transition to the CVS name. A memorable display piece for former customers, local history fans, and collectors of regional retail brands.
Peoples Drug was founded in 1905 by Malcolm Gibbs in Alexandria, Virginia. It soon opened a Washington, D.C., location on 7th Street NW and moved to a larger site at Mount Vernon Square in 1909. A second location followed in 1912, with two more added in 1916. By 1944, the business operated 130 stores under the Peoples Drugs, Days Drug, and Shearer Drug names. In 1970, its 252 stores served customers across the District of Columbia and ten states. Lane Drug bought a 22 percent interest in 1972 and acquired the chain outright in 1975, forming a 380-store company that retained the Peoples name alongside several other drugstore brands. Imasco acquired Peoples in 1984 and pursued a program to bring many locations under the Peoples Drug name, while also selling stores and divisions in subsequent years. Melville Corporation, owner of CVS, purchased the remaining chain in 1990. CVS continued operating stores under the Peoples banner while remodeling many to its own format. In May 1994, the stores adopted the CVS name, ending the Peoples Drug name’s use in the chain.
