GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Carry a reminder of Republic Airlines and the changing map of U.S. air travel. Formed in 1979 through the merger of North Central Airlines and Southern Airways, Republic built hubs in Minneapolis–Saint Paul, Detroit and Memphis, then added western reach with its 1980 acquisition of Hughes Airwest. Its routes, aircraft and Republic Perks program remain part of a compelling aviation story. This double-sided keychain charm suits collectors who appreciate the airline’s place in Northwest and Delta history.
Republic Airlines began operations on July 1, 1979, when North Central Airlines and Southern Airways merged in the first airline merger following the federal Airline Deregulation Act. Headquartered at Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport in Minnesota, Republic operated hubs there, at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, and at Memphis International Airport. In 1980, it acquired Hughes Airwest, adding hubs at Phoenix Sky Harbor and Las Vegas McCarran and briefly becoming the U.S. airline serving the greatest number of airports. Its fleet included McDonnell Douglas DC-9s, Boeing 727-200s and 757-200s, MD-80s, and Convair 580 turboprops. Financial losses and service reductions challenged the airline in the early 1980s. In 1985, Republic Express feeder flights connected smaller cities with its Detroit, Memphis, and Minneapolis hubs. Northwest Orient Airlines announced its purchase of Republic on January 23, 1986; the $884 million merger was completed October 1. Northwest dropped Orient from its name and incorporated Republic’s hubs into its domestic network. Northwest later merged with Delta Air Lines, with Delta becoming the surviving carrier in January 2010. The former Republic headquarters is now Delta Air Lines Building C.
