GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Keep the conversation on retail memories with a can cooler celebrating Revco Discount Drug Stores. Founded in Detroit in 1956 as the Registered Vitamin Company, Revco grew across the Ohio Valley and other regions, weathered bankruptcy, and rebuilt its business before its acquisition by CVS in 1997. The company’s story recalls neighborhood drugstores, discount programs, and a changing era of pharmacy shopping. It makes a spirited addition to casual get-togethers or a small, memorable find for a Revco collector.
Revco began in 1956 in Detroit, Michigan, as the Registered Vitamin Company, founded by Sidney Dworkin and Bernie Shulman. It grew into a major drugstore chain serving the Ohio Valley, Mid-Atlantic, and Southeastern United States, and was later based in Twinsburg, Ohio. By 1983 it operated more than 2,200 stores, but problems following its purchase of New Jersey closeout retailer Odd Lot Trading Co. and a costly move into non-drug merchandise weakened the business. A 1986 leveraged buyout, store closures, debt, and inventory shortages led to bankruptcy in 1988. Investor Sam Zell helped fund a recovery, and Revco emerged as an independent company in 1992 after closing underperforming locations, reducing costs, and introducing computerized point-of-sale systems and a redesigned store layout. The chain expanded again, buying more than 800 Hook's/SupeRx stores in 1994 and Birmingham-based Big B Drugs in 1996. After a proposed 1996 sale to Rite Aid was withdrawn amid antitrust concerns, CVS Pharmacy acquired Revco in February 1997 for $2.8 billion. The agreement required divestitures of stores in Virginia and the Binghamton, New York area.
