The Interpublic Group of Companies, known as IPG, began in New York City on October 2, 1930, when H.K. McCann Co., founded in 1911, merged with Erickson Co., founded in 1902, to form McCann-Erickson. The agency was described at the time as the largest in the advertising industry. A 1960 restructuring created four operating units, and in January 1961 McCann became Interpublic Group, establishing a marketing services management holding company with McCann-Erickson as a subsidiary. In late 1973, McCann-Erickson united its domestic and international branches into a worldwide agency. IPG later formed McCann-Erickson World Group in 1997, acquired Deutsch in 2000 and True North Communications in 2001, and renamed the network McCann Worldgroup in 2004. Mediabrands was formed in 2008, FCB became the international network name in 2014, and MullenLowe Group followed the Mullen and Lowe and Partners merger in 2016. In 2025, Omnicom acquired IPG and later folded its operations into Omnicom.
