Bring a memorable airline identity into your space with this US Airways Metal Sign. Its story began in Pittsburgh in 1939 with mail flights serving the Ohio River valley, then passed through the All American Airways, Allegheny Airlines, and USAir names. The 1997 US Airways rebrand marked another chapter in a company shaped by airline acquisitions and changing networks. A conversation piece for aviation enthusiasts, this sign recalls a brand that joined American Airlines and disappeared from use in 2015.
US Airways traced its history to All American Aviation, founded in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1939 as a mail carrier serving the Ohio River valley. The company moved into passenger service in 1949 as All American Airways and became Allegheny Airlines on January 1, 1953. Following airline deregulation, Allegheny adopted the USAir name in 1979 and expanded beyond its northeastern network. Acquisitions shaped its reach: it absorbed Lake Central in 1968 and Mohawk in 1972, then acquired Pacific Southwest Airlines in 1986 and Piedmont Airlines in 1987, completing those transactions in 1988 and 1989. USAir adopted the US Airways name and a new identity in 1997. After financial difficulties and two Chapter 11 filings, it combined with America West in 2005 in a reverse merger, retaining the US Airways brand while America West executives largely led the company. In 2013, US Airways and American Airlines announced a merger; their holding companies combined on December 9. The unified airline used the American Airlines name and branding. The FAA issued a single operating certificate on April 8, 2015, ending US Airways as an independent carrier, and the brand remained in use until October 2015.
