From Wachovia National Bank’s Winston-Salem beginnings in 1879 to its Charlotte-based growth, First Union merger, and national expansion, the brand became familiar to customers and collectors across several regions. Wachovia was a diversified financial services company based in Charlotte, North Carolina, with roots reaching back to Wachovia National Bank, founded in Winston-Salem on June 16, 1879. First Union began as Union National Bank in Charlotte on June 2, 1908, became First Union Corporation in 1967, and expanded through acquisitions including First Fidelity Bancorporation in 1995 and CoreStates Financial Corporation in 1998. Wachovia expanded across the Southeast and beyond through purchases including First Atlanta in 1986, South Carolina National Corporation in 1991, and Golden West Financial in 2006. On September 4, 2001, First Union and Wachovia merged; although First Union was the acquiring party, the combined company adopted the Wachovia name and stock symbol and was based in Charlotte. Wachovia later operated brands including Wachovia Securities, Evergreen Investments, Wachovia Capital Partners, and Wachovia Capital Finance. Wells Fargo agreed to acquire Wachovia in October 2008, and the acquisition closed on December 31, 2008. The Wachovia brand was gradually absorbed into Wells Fargo, with the final branches converted on October 15, 2011.
