Founded in Winston-Salem in 1879, Wachovia later made Charlotte its base and grew through major mergers before becoming part of Wells Fargo in 2008. Wachovia was a diversified financial services company based in Charlotte, North Carolina. Its history began on June 16, 1879, when Wachovia National Bank was founded in Winston-Salem by James Alexander Gray and William Lemly. In 1911, it merged with Wachovia Loan and Trust Company, founded in 1893. First Union traced its origins to Union National Bank, founded in Charlotte on June 2, 1908, and later expanded through mergers including First Fidelity Bancorporation in 1995 and CoreStates Financial Corporation in 1998. First Union and Wachovia merged officially on September 4, 2001. Although First Union was the acquiring institution, the combined company adopted the Wachovia name and stock symbol, with Charlotte as its base and important operations remaining in Winston-Salem. Wachovia later acquired SouthTrust, Westcorp, Golden West Financial, and A. G. Edwards. During the 2008 financial crisis, it faced major losses and agreed to be acquired by Wells Fargo. That acquisition closed on December 31, 2008. The Wachovia brand was gradually absorbed into Wells Fargo, with the final branches converted on October 15, 2011.
