GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Keep business cards close with a nod to Washington Mutual's place in American banking history. The Seattle institution began in 1889 as a building and loan association and later expanded nationwide through major acquisitions. Its recognizable WaMu name evokes a changing era of home lending, banking growth, and the 2008 financial crisis, when its banking operations entered federal receivership. This metal business card holder suits collectors, former customers, and anyone who appreciates the stories behind familiar companies and their lasting transitions.
Washington Mutual began in Seattle in 1889 as the Washington National Building Loan and Investment Association, formed after the Great Seattle Fire. It made its first West Coast home mortgage loan in 1890, adopted the Washington Savings and Loan Association name in 1908, and operated as Washington Mutual Savings Bank from 1917. The institution demutualized in 1983 and became a public company; in 1994 it reorganized as Washington Mutual, Inc., a holding company. A long acquisition period expanded its reach across the United States and into mortgage lending and credit cards. Major purchases included Great Western Financial in 1997, Home Savings in 1998, Bank United in 2001, and Providian in 2005. WaMu moved its headquarters to WaMu Center in downtown Seattle in 2006. After heavy deposit withdrawals in September 2008, federal regulators seized its banking operations and placed them in FDIC receivership on September 25. The FDIC sold the banking subsidiaries to JPMorgan Chase for $1.9 billion. WaMu branches were rebranded as Chase branches by the end of 2009. The holding company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in Delaware on September 26, 2008.
