The company began in Newport Beach in 1962 as Lorne's, then adopted the Wet Seal name and grew into a familiar destination for teenage fashion. Its story includes the Arden B. and Blink by Wet Seal brands, a 2015 Chapter 11 filing, and a shift to online-only retail after Gordon Brothers acquired the brand. A travel accessory with a connection to a memorable retail era.
Wet Seal began in Newport Beach, California, in 1962 as Lorne's, founded by Lorne Huycke. The Wet Seal name came from a remark by Huycke's wife, who said a model in a bathing suit looked like a "wet seal." The company was incorporated under the Wet Seal name in 1990 and later based in Foothill Ranch and Los Angeles, California. In 1995, it acquired 237 Contempo Casuals stores from the Neiman Marcus Group. Contempo Casuals continued under its own name until 2001, when remaining stores were converted to Wet Seal or, in many cases, the Arden B. brand, launched in November 1998. The company announced its Blink by Wet Seal concept in June 2010. Its mall-based retail businesses served women, with Wet Seal and Blink focused on teenage girls and Arden B offering contemporary women's fashion until its planned closures by 2015. In January 2015, amid increased competition, Wet Seal filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in California. In January 2017, it closed its stores and terminated staff. Gordon Brothers acquired the brand, which continued as an online-only retailer.
