GhostCorp Apparel - resurrecting iconic corporate ghosts.
Add a small tribute to Woolco's retail history to everyday drives. The chain began in Columbus, Ohio, in 1962 and expanded rapidly, reaching more than 300 stores across North America by the mid-1970s. Woolco's story spans the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, with store histories that took different paths after the company years. Canadian shoppers remember its monthly $1.44 Days, while many communities recall the stores as part of suburban life. This car coaster is a nod to a familiar name in discount shopping.
Woolco was a full-line discount department store chain founded by the F. W. Woolworth Company in Columbus, Ohio. Its first store opened on June 6, 1962, as the company sought to enter discount retail while maintaining its variety-store business. Woolco grew rapidly: by 1966 it had 18 U.S. stores and nine in Canada, and more than 300 locations had opened across North America by the mid-1970s. The chain also operated in the United Kingdom, where a large Bournemouth store opened in 1968. Woolco tested the Worth Mart format in the 1960s, then folded those stores into Woolco by the 1970s. Facing financial pressure, Woolworth announced in September 1982 that it would close its U.S. stores; all 336 had shut by January 1983. Canadian stores continued operating. On January 14, 1994, Woolworth sold most of its Canadian Woolco stores to Walmart as Walmart entered that market. In Britain, the stores passed from Woolworth ownership to Gateway and then Asda. Some former Canadian locations later became Zellers stores, and some subsequently passed to Target Canada.
