Founded in 1961, Air Afrique was built as something unusually ambitious: a multinational airline jointly backed by several West and Central African nations. From its base in Abidjan, it connected cities across Africa with major destinations in Europe and eventually New York, becoming one of the continent’s most recognizable international carriers.

For decades, Air Afrique represented a kind of post-independence optimism — one airline, many countries, and a network stretching far beyond national borders.

Unfortunately, running an airline by committee turned out to be about as easy as it sounds.

Mounting debt, management problems, political complications, and years of unsuccessful rescue attempts eventually overwhelmed the carrier. Air Afrique ceased operations and entered liquidation in 2002, leaving behind one of the most distinctive names in African aviation history.
