Amoco was one of the great names of American petroleum, with roots stretching back to the Standard Oil era and a familiar red, white, and blue torch logo seen on gas stations across the country. For generations, the company sold gasoline, motor oil, chemicals, and enough roadside Americana to make the Amoco sign part of the landscape.

Then came the merger.

In 1998, Amoco combined with British Petroleum in one of the largest industrial mergers of its time, and the Amoco name gradually disappeared from most stations as BP took over the spotlight.
