Founded in Chicago in 1913, Arthur Andersen grew from a small accounting firm into one of the legendary “Big Five” accounting giants, auditing some of the largest corporations in America and building a reputation for professionalism, independence, and very serious people carrying very serious briefcases.

Then came Enron.

Arthur Andersen’s role in the Enron scandal — including the destruction of audit-related documents — triggered criminal charges, a collapse in client confidence, and the surrender of its licenses to practice public accounting in the United States in 2002. Its conviction was later overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court, but by then the firm was already effectively gone.

Nearly 90 years of accounting history, undone faster than you can say “document retention policy.”
